A Word about Culture

Given the right conditions, human beings are capable of great wisdom and open-heartedness. Even so, our world remains steeped in racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, and other forms of ignorant prejudice. The cultural messages that we take in about ourselves and others are sources of deep shame and sorrow--no matter whether they are stories of our inferiority or our superiority.

Therapy is one venue where you can explore the legacy of internalized oppression and prejudice, transform it at its root, and learn to rejoin the human family without apology for who you are. It is also a place where the joy you feel about your identity and where you come from can become part of your healing. I commit to honoring your individuality and your cultural "homes" and to treating you with respect. When I make a mistake, I commit to addressing it with you candidly and correcting my blind spots.
